Johannesburg - Eskom chief executive, Jacob Maroga, was back on Monday morning and doing his job, according to his personal assistant.

"He's in a meeting right now and yes, he is working," said the assistant, Helen Bezuidenhout. "Unfortunately that's all I can say at the moment." Bezuidenhout confirmed that it was not Bobby Godsell whom Maroga was meeting. She also couldn't commit to whether a statement would be issued later today. "Not now," she said.

That comes after Eskom chairperson Bobby Godsell confirmed to Eskom staff last week that Maroga had "resigned with immediate effect and the board accepted his resignation". Maroga was himself absent from the meeting, which was addressed by Godsell and non-executive director Mpho Makwana.

The staff meeting also came an hour after Godsell and Makwana apparently informed the parastatal's top 60 managers that the board had chosen two senior managers as acting chief executives.

Spokesperson Andrew Etzinger also confirmed Maroga was "back at office" but said only the board can say anything at this stage.

Godsell has not responded to questions Fin24.com sent to him since last Thursday.
