Mandela building to go under the hammer

Johannesburg - The historic Nelson Mandela Building in Johannesburg's CBD, where the former president served his legal articles, is to be auctioned on June 23.

Mandela served as an article clerk at the law firm Witkin, Sidelsky and Eidelman in 1942, which was in the building.

In the 1940s, it was called the Old Mutual building.

The 11-storey, 15 102m² building on the corner of Harrison and Commissioner Streets was renamed after its famous tenant. It is owned by CIDA City Campus, which provides higher education for socioeconomic development.

The building was donated to CIDA by First National Bank in 2006 as part of the bank's corporate social responsibility project. Its anchor tenant, the Education Alive School, has a lease until 2015.

The property will be taken to auction by Auction Alliance.
