Mandela banknotes selling at huge premiums

Cape Town - South African banknotes with images of the Nelson Mandela are selling at a huge premium on e-commerce giant eBay.

A collection of three notes - a R10, a R20 and a R50 (altogether R80) - is currently being sold for R392.

A R20 note described as spotless is being auctioned for R103.

The eBay site shows a huge interest in the notes, with more than 20 bids already made on several of the notes being offered for sale.

The sellers seem to be based overseas, judging from their profiles on the auction site.

Memorabilia bearing Mandela's image is gaining popularity and Mandela's biography The Long Walk to Freedom is once again topping bestseller lists across the globe. The book is older than 20 years.
