Malema denies building R16m house

2011-07-20 12:34

Johannesburg - ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema denied on Wednesday that he was building a R16m house in the posh Johannesburg suburb of Sandown, insisting that he is not a rich man.

"A house costing R16m to construct only exists in the imagination of right-wing, narrow-minded and obsessed white people who always think Africans cannot and should not build houses of their own.

"Whether we are building a house or not does not belong in the media, and even if there was such a house being built it would certainly not cost anything close to R16m," Malema told reporters in Johannesburg.

He declined to give details of his financial interests, saying he was not a public figure.

He said he had a house in Sandton and a Mercedes Benz but that they both belonged to Absa Group [JSE:ASA].

"Instead of being rich, I remain poor but credit-worthy," Malema said.

He was responding to allegations in the Sunday Independent at the weekend that he was building a mansion in Sandown which would include an underground bunker.

i guess the media is running out of stories hey ,we have a serious problem with petrol in the country and u decide to publish this nonsense,so what if he is building a r16m house that is his business, this is childish gossip

Can't understand why the press put themselves at risk by not investigating matters fully - is it just sensationalism that they seek?. Surely when this news item broke it would have been a simple matter to look at the title deeds through the deeds office and made contact with the CoJ development planning transportation and environment - building control department to see what was to be built on the property - also unless the stand is cleared for multiple storey's the plans would have to be signed off by neighbours. Come on people do some proper research before publishing articles

Malema is correct. Its nowhere near R16M.Its closer to R15.5M.

"I remain poor but credit-worthy" BWAHAHAHAHAHA I'll have to sell my shares in ABSA since Julius seems to be saying that they are giving millions of rands worth of credit to poor people! Or maybe it is secured against Julius's very generous income from all the companies that he has interests in? I suppose it all comes down to your definition of rich...

If Mr Malema is the "champion of the poor" and IF he is in fact building a R 16 Mio house why doesn't he just build a hovel for R 8 Mio and give the balance to low cost housing projects further endearing himself to the 'struggle'..........

"A house costing R16m to construct only exists in the imagination of right-wing, narrow-minded and obsessed white people who always think Africans cannot and should not build houses of their own." So are the white people not Africans? This guy is really annoying! The sad thing is, that far too many black Africans believe what this uneducated person is saying. "He declined to give details of his financial interests, saying he was not a public figure" I wish he wasn't....!!! Poor South Africa!

the comment about white people is irrelevant in this matter its either you are building a house or not, race has nothing to do with this, and the fact that he is not a public figure i disagree with,What are you hiding JULIUS????????? Absa account holders haha,be carefull.......he is on to u :)
