Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia will increase its tariff on electricity by at least 15% in January as part of the government's efforts to rein in the budget deficit.
Maximus Ongkili, energy, green technology and water minister, said the tariff in peninsular Malaysia will be increased by 15%, while the rate in Sabah will be increased by about 17%.
Electricity tariffs in the state of Sarawak, a major source of hydroelectric power, will not be affected. Malaysia last increased its electricity tariff in June 2011.
In September, the government reduced its subsidy on fuel to cut the deficit.
The following month the government abolished the subsidy on sugar and announced a new consumption tax starting in 2015.
The budget deficit was 4.5% of gross domestic product last year.
