Majuba power station bolsters production

Cape Town - The Majuba power station has ramped up its generating capacity to 1 400MW on Wednesday, Eskom said in a statement.

"More units from Majuba are due to be synchronised to the grid later today [Wednesday] with the potential of increasing generating capacity to 3 200MW."

The power utility said the recovery programme at the Majuba Power Station, where a silo collapsed which resulted in Eskom implementing load shedding on Sunday, is proceeding well.

The silo, which stored over 10 000 tons of coal, affected all six units at the power station.

"Teams are working 24/7 moving coal from stock piles to the conveyer belts which are the link to the generating units."

However, Eskom also said that wet weather is posing a challenge.

"We have implemented a wet coal management strategy to ensure that the wet coal risk is reduced in our other power stations. It is however not possible to neutralise this risk completely, especially over periods of prolonged, high rainfall."

Eskom said earlier on Wednesday that it did not expect rolling blackouts, despite the power system being tight, reported Sapa.

"No load shedding [is] expected as things stand," spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said.

"We are taking this week one day at a time, so no guarantees for tomorrow at this stage."

The Star reported on Wednesday that the energy department warned that South Africa faces unplanned power outages unless R68bn was invested in the electricity maintenance infrastructure backlog, according to Sapa.
