Johannesburg - South Africa construction and engineering firm Murray & Roberts Holdings has started the process of laying off 1 400 staff, the Solidarity union said on Thursday.
Solidarity said in a statement that Murray & Roberts, which has big contracts in the struggling mining sector, cited economic conditions and limited growth regarding existing contracts as the reason for the cuts.
It said M&R employed 15 000 people.
The union said that brought the total number of planned retrenchments in South Africa to more than 24 000.
Miners have unveiled thousands of job cuts in Africa's biggest economy in recent weeks, but M&R is one of the first construction companies to plan lay-offs.
M&R shares rose 4.2% to R45.85 by R45.85 by 07:49 GMT, outpacing a 1.36% stronger Johannesburg construction index.
