Labour Q&A with Terry Bell
Fin24 user Lucky Rikhotso says urgent intervention by the government is needed in the escalating strikes to help safeguard the economy. He writes:
"The South African leadership needs to do something about this strikes because they cripple the economy.
"They must also do away with the labour brokers because you can work for a company for many years and get fired like a dog at the end of the day because of the so-called agencies.
"Our leaders must action or the economy will be affected badly."
Terry Bell responds:
The withholding of labour - strikes - is the only real weapon workers have in a competitive economy that relies on their labour. But the abusive behaviour of some - perhaps many - labour brokers is certainly something that must be dealt with and is an issue that has again come very much to the fore.
So you are probably right, Lucky, that action must be taken or we will all suffer the consequences.
