Johannesburg - Solidarity will tackle planned layoffs by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the union said on Thursday.
"Solidarity will do everything in its power to limit the planned layoffs at the state-controlled technology company TIA and to find other, sensible solutions for the company’s problems," said spokeswoman Jahni Cowley.
"The trade union received a section 189A notice from the company earlier, indicating that as many as 75 employees will be affected by the retrenchment process."
Cowley said the company stated it wanted to improve its efficiency and profitability by means of the layoffs.
However, layoffs should be the last resort for a company whose growth and performance were under pressure.
"Solidarity wants to help put the company on the road to prosperity by means of constructive and sensible negotiations. Unfortunately, the company has been mismanaged thus far and loyal employees now have to suffer for it," said Cowley.
She said the retrenchment process would be facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA).
The CCMA’s facilitation of the process would help to ensure that the negotiations were fair and transparent.
"Solidarity will also do everything it can to limit the effect of the layoffs on its members," she said.
