Cosatu kicks media out of congress

Johannesburg - For the first time media have been barred from sitting in a Cosatu congress while issues of credentials are discussed.

In the past media have been allowed to cover a Cosatu Congress in its entirety even when sensitive issues were discussed.

The federation is holding a two-day special national congress in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Cosatu goes to its special national congress divided over their support for the current leadership and expelled general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

Unions which wanted Vavi reinstated called for the congress to be held. They want Vavi and Numsa reinstated into the federation.

The congress got off to a slow start as unions sang songs in support of their different factions. Those against Vavi sang disparaging songs about his affair with a junior employee.

First deputy president Tyotyo James called on delegates to not sing about individuals and conduct themselves in a dignified manner.
