NUM and mine management held a meeting on Friday last week where the question of forced retrenchments was raised, spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said in a statement.
"In the meeting, management presented to the NUM that the company is over complement in some of the categories within the company, and in our discussions it was agreed to look at other means of avoiding forced retrenchments."
One option was to open up enhanced voluntary separation packages.
"There is no agreement on forced retrenchments because the company has not served the union with the notice as required by section 189 of Labour Relations Act," Mammburu said.
