Cape municipal workers to strike again

Cape Town - Cape Town municipal workers plan to resume a strike next month, claiming managers have ignored their grievances, Samwu's regional chair Jonathan Krakri said on Thursday.

He said workers suspended a strike in May after mayor Patricia de Lille intervened, saying executive directors would meet SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) shopstewards in July.

He said some directors met for the sake of complying, while others ignored the instruction.

"The result is that the workers' issues remain unresolved five months after the suspension of the strike action," said Krakri.

"Workers are starting to lose faith in this process and the union is faced with ongoing work stoppages at different work places."

Members planned to go on a protected strike on October 31.

The union's Cape Metro region claimed there had been an "alarming" number of disciplinary actions against its members.

It claimed its shopstewards were being charged or dismissed.

Krakri said De Lille's actions showed she did not understand collective bargaining.

However, the union remained open to resolving these issues with her, should she wish.
