Cape Town - Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant praised her department on Thursday for achieving a clean audit report, the first in six years.
“I would like to congratulate the team for their sterling work in ensuring that we spend the money entrusted to us by the people of South Africa in a prudent and responsible manner,” Oliphant said on Thursday.
The unqualified report was for the 2010/11 financial year.
“Over a period of six financial years, dating back to the 2004/05 financial year, the Auditor General has issued a qualified opinion on the financial statements of the department on a number of matters,” she said.
“These ranged from the absence of supporting documentation in respect of journal transactions to the management of assets within the department.”
Achieving an unqualified audit proved the department had sufficient in-house capacity to manage its assets, contrary to popular belief that such expertise had to be acquired externally, Oliphant said.
