Johannesburg - Seven of KwaZulu-Natal's 61 municipalities received clean audits for 2012/13, the co-operative governance and traditional affairs department (Cogta) in the province said on Wednesday.
"The seven clean audits for KZN municipalities is the best result this province has seen to date and the culmination of steady improvements..." Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said in a statement.
The department had worked closely with municipalities to improve their audit outcomes.
The clean audits were achieved in Uthungulu, Umhlathuze, Ntambanana, Ubuhlebezwe, Umzimkhulu, Okhahlamba, and Msinga municipalities.
This was a marked improvement from the last municipal audits, in which the province received only one clean audit.
There were another 19 improved audit outcomes for the province's municipalities, and a substantial reduction in the number of audit queries and disclaimers.
The department congratulated the administrative and political leadership of the improved municipalities.
"The few remaining technical challenges have to do with municipal asset management, which is still a recurring audit issue along with revenue-related matters," Dube-Ncube said.
"Both of these areas will receive additional targeted support from Cogta as we analyse the latest audit outcomes with municipalities on an individual basis."
