Johannesburg - The launch of Johannesburg's Bus Integrated Rapid Transport System (BRT), known as Rea Vaya, has been delayed until the end of August.
The announcement was made on Thursday, a day after President Jacob Zuma said in his state of the nation address that talks between the taxi industry and the transport ministry will resume in June.
In March, taxi operators protested against the project, saying they would lose their jobs and position as the city's public transport backbone.
"We decided to postpone the starting date to August (30) in line with national developments," said mayoral committee member for transportation Rehana Moosajee. "We renew our call to taxi operators to take part in the negotiations."
Thursday's announcement confirmed that the BRT won't be ready for this month's Confederation Cup.
Spectators will have to make use of car parks and a dedicated shuttle service at key locations around Ellis Park. The service will be called iTransie 2 Ellispark.
The first phase of the BRT will operate between Regina Mundi in Soweto and Ellis Park.
The BRT will enjoy dedicated lanes and aims to transport 430 000 people per day from designated terminals outside the CBD, while relying on taxis and buses to ferry commuters to the terminals.
