Joburg traders head to ConCourt

Johannesburg - The city's informal traders have approached the Constitutional Court in a bid to return to the inner city's pavements to trade.

"The traders hope to be heard in the Constitutional Court on Thursday," the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of SA (Seri) said in a statement on Monday.

The High Court in Johannesburg struck an application by the traders from the roll on Wednesday. The traders wanted the court to order the City of Johannesburg to allow them back to their trading spots.

They were removed to allow the city to verify how many were trading in the CBD.

Judge Ramarumo Monama ruled their application was not urgent.

Seri's lawyer Nomzamo Zondo said the matter should be dealt with urgently.

The traders hoped the Constitutional Court would put them in a position to continue their business activities, pending the outcome of their application for leave to appeal the high court's ruling.
