Cape Town - Aviation fuel shortages could be South Africa's "biggest embarrassment" when it hosts the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) MD Monhla Hlahla warned parliament on Wednesday.
"We are ready to accommodate the visitors that will come to this country for the tournament, while allowing the normal course of business to continue," she told parliament's transport portfolio committee on Wednesday. "The biggest risk to all this is aviation. The issue of fuel must never be forgotten."
Hlahla's comments came after airlines had to cut their fuel uptake by 30% at OR Tambo International Airport last week. This prompted Energy Minister Dipuo Peters to launch a task team investigating reasons for the shortage, and how a recurrence could be prevented.
Fuel companies blamed Transnet for delivery problems, but Hlahla urged MPs to think more carefully before they simply "beat up" the transport utility over it.
Hlahla said that if a single refinery or supplier goes out of operation, it throws the whole system out.
She warned the country would not be able to afford this during the World Cup, as airports were going to function 24 hours a day.
