Johannesburg - A consortium of companies including Murray & Roberts, Grinaker-LTA Civil Engineering and Concor were on Friday awarded the R2.9bn contract for the main civil works at Eskom's Medupi Power Station in Limpopo province.
Medupi Power Station is SA's first greenfield coal-fired
station to be built in more than 20 years, and will cost an estimated R80bn to build.
The project is being undertaken as part of the power utility's New Build Programme, which will see at least R300bn spent on the recommissioning and construction of power stations.
"Medupi is one of the key installations in Eskom's New Build Programme that is geared towards closing the current supply-demand gap," said Eskom chief-officer for generation Brian Dames.
Dames said the contract included significant local content, which will help to create a solid local manufacturing platform around the build programme.
Partnerships
"We hope that partnerships formed with our suppliers will ensure that we deliver our projects in time and offer us some pricing predictability," he added.
The first unit is scheduled for completion in 2012 with the entire station completed by 2015.
Eskom said Medupi would be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world and will have an installed capacity of approximately 4 800 megawatts.
The contract covers all civil engineering work and construction of roads, drains, foundations, column supports, floor slabs and basements.
Also included are a utility spine and connectors beneath an auxiliary bay, the boiler house and turbine hall.
"The awarding of the contract followed a thorough tender evaluation and adjudication process," Eskom said.
The Medupi Power Station Joint Venture is expected to commence works on site shortly.
