Johannesburg - India is seeking to strengthen trade ties with South Africa, especially in the small, micro and medium enterprise (SMME) space, the country's envoy said on Tuesday.
"There is nothing more effective than an SMME when it comes to job creation," said Indian high commissioner to South Africa Virendra Gupta.
"I believe that the lead of the hour is the SMME. That is the area in which (the) Indian and South African relationship can be expanded."
Gupta said more than 70 Indian companies would take part in the SA International Trade Exhibition (Saitex) this year.
These companies came from various sectors, including food and beverages, electronic equipment, sports equipment, hand tools and leisure equipment.
Gupta said the move was expected to strengthen South African trade with India, especially in the SMME market. Saitex will be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand from July 15 to 17.
In May, the President of India, Pratibha Patil, visited South Africa with a trade delegation. Her delegation met various business organisations in SA to strengthen trade between the two countries.
India is the biggest importer of South African coal at 25 million tons a year, and more than half of South Africa's HIV drugs come from India.
