High risk of load shedding, says Eskom

Cape Town - Power utility Eskom has issued a warning that there is a high risk of load shedding on Wednesday, saying the grid is under pressure. "Any changes on the generating plant can result in load shedding," Eskom posted on its Twitter feed at 06:20.

The utility announced that it had stopped load shedding at 21:33 on Tuesday, but pointed out that restoration of power could take longer in some areas.

Eskom also praised consumers for responding to its call to cut down on electricity usage. "We would like to thank all the customers who responded to our call and reduced their energy consumption, which helps reduce the severity of load shedding," it said.

The utility said the system would continue to be under severe pressure for the rest of the week, and the risk of load shedding remains. Consumers will be provided with regular updates on the status of the power system, Eskom said.

There were three faults that impacted on the grid on Tuesday. Tutuka’s unit 6 experienced a condenser tube leak on Monday night and had to be taken offline, Duvha’s unit 6 had an outage so that repairs could be done on its oil cooler, while work was ongoing at Koeberg’s unit 1, which experienced an earth fault on the generator transformer on Sunday.
