Cape Town - Good sales are expected for toy retailers over the festive period.
Prima Toy, southern Africa’s largest toy distributor, and Redgwoods, which owns the biggest toy and baby shops locally, are both positive about the holiday season.
Issy Zimmerman, a director at Redgwoods, which has Reggie’s, Toys R Us and Baby & Company in its stable, said that in October the company had enjoyed its highest historical turnover.
Zimmerman reckoned October was only the beginning of a strong quarter for toy sales. As far as Redgwoods was concerned, the company’s December sales would also receive a boost from the strength of the rand and Redgwoods’ direct import facilities.
Good sales were expected for toys such as the Nintendo DS/Nintendo DSI and the Sony PSP. According to Kate Schoombie, brand manager for Prima Toy, the top-selling boys’ toys would probably be Paper Jamz instruments, Real Construction, Dragons Universe, Beyblade spinning tops and Kung Zhu Hamsters.
For the girls, products by Bratz, Littlest Pet Shop, Moxie Teenz and Baby Born top the shopping lists.
Schoombie believed the educational computer game Leapster Explorer would also be found in the Christmas stockings of many children aged four to nine.
