Johannesburg - Seven of Gauteng's 16 provincial agencies have received clean audit reports, while eight received unqualified reports with conditions, the province said on Friday.

Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe said this showed the province was moving closer to achieving its 2014 target set by "Operation Clean Audit" (Opca).

"Our strategies are yielding positive results. We are addressing audit findings that prevent the achievement of desired results," he said.

"We have also eliminated adverse audit findings and disclaimers in all our public entities. However, we understand that we need to do more to achieve Opca."

Seven agencies had achieved clean audit reports, while another eight received audits that were "financially unqualified, but with other matters".

The Gauteng Liquor Board and the health and social development department received qualified audits.

No provincial department or agency received an adverse or disclaimer opinion, which would have indicated serious problems.

Nkomfe said the audits that were "unqualified but with other matters" meant the province had to improve compliance with the Public Finance Management Act, as well as with Treasury regulations.

"This will ensure that our departments move from unqualified to clean audits," he said.

The finance department would help departments and agencies in this regard, including providing training for financial staff, auditing of interim statements, monthly monitoring of spending, and preventing unauthorised spending.
