Some media reports have incorrectly suggested CPD was to be abolished.
In a statement, HPCSA spokesperson Phephela Makgoke said the council had recently announced that the current CPD programme would be reconfigured to ensure that the objective of enhancing health practitioners' skills and knowledge was met.
"The programme needs to establish whether we are improving the skills and knowledge of our practitioners... or whether we are placing more emphasis on the accumulation of points."
In the meantime the status quo remained, Makgoke said. All practitioners registered under boards following compulsory programmes have to continue attending CPD activities.
The council apologised to practitioners for the administrative and IT shortcomings of the current system and said "the reconfigured system would be logistically sound... prior to its implementation."
Two task teams have been appointed by the CPD committee to investigate possible improvements.
Doctors, dentists, psychologists, ambulance personnel and physiotherapists are among the professionals registered with the HPCSA.
