Johannesburg - The Exxaro coal group plans to erect a 200MW concentrated solar power plant near its coal mines at Lephalale in Limpopo.

This is according to Exxaro manager for growth and energy Thomas Garner, who spoke at the international solar power conference, Solar World 2009, on Wednesday.

Exxaro is also conducting a viability study for a 100MW wind farm on the site of its Namakwa Sands operations at Brand se Baai on the West Coast.

Barry MacColl, technology and strategy manager at Eskom's sustainability unit, told the conference the R30bn his division had budgeted for building pilot solar power projects over the next 10 years had been included in the tariff application Eskom submitted to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

The power utility aims to build 650MW of concentrated solar power capacity between 2019 and 2022.
