Cape Town - The leader of the Independent Democrats,
Patricia de Lille complained on Wednesday about "sky-rocketing accommodation
and air travel prices" associated with the soccer World Cup next year.
She said she is concerned about the "possible exclusivity" of the
competition "because our fellow Africans from other countries will be
expected to pay what those carrying dollars, pounds and euro are going to
pay".
She added: "This is the first time that the World Cup is being hosted in
Africa and we as South Africans are hosting it on our continent's behalf.
However, with the huge increases in prices due to the increasing demand for
a variety of services during the competition, it is clear that we will be
excluding thousands of our fellow Africans from other parts of Africa.
"Greedy suppliers are fast losing sight of this fact by allowing the
smell of dollars, pounds and euro to strip away their compassion. As leaders
we must look at ways of preventing visitors from the continent from being
excluded due to the lure of elitist currencies."
The ID Leader says she will submit a question to the Minister of
Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, to find out firstly whether he is aware of
these increases and secondly, what he is doing about them?
"We would also like to know if he will look at finding measures to
alleviate the effect on potential visitors from other parts of Africa," De
Lille said.
