Govt 'undermines public services'

Johannesburg - The government was accused on Wednesday of undermining public services in its labour negotiations with public unions.

"[It] is undermining its mandate to ensure that communities are provided with quality public services, delivered by public sector workers who are paid a living wage," said the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu).

Union official Nomthandazo Sikiti said negotiations between government and public-sector unions had reached an impasse, with the former behaving "like an intransigent employer".

"We urge the government to return to the negotiating table, with an offer that befits a government that is supposed to be working to eradicate poverty," Sikiti said.

Public administration spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya declined to comment on Nehawu's accusations. He said government was still in negotiations with unions.

"We are busy with the negotiations. When we are done with the negotiations we will communicate," Mabaya said.

Sikiti said public sector unions would be meeting their international counterparts at the 2012 Public Services International, to be held in Durban in November this year.
