Cape Town - Speculation about Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan preparing for his golden years has been laid to rest by the Treasury on Monday.
Treasury Department spokesperson Jabulani Sikhakhane said in statement that a media report stating that Gordhan will resign following the upcoming elections were taken out of context.
"Gordhan said that whether he returns will be decided by the president and the ANC."
Sikhakhane said this was a standard answer that ministers give in response to similar questions because they are appointed by the president of the country.
Gordhan always discusses activities that take up a substantial proportion of his time with his family, he said.
"He did the same with the current assignment and will do so on any assignment that the ANC and the president wish to have him perform in the future."
However, Sikhakhane added that no such meeting is in the pipeline for Gordhan to discuss his retirement from public office.
Gordhan was the commissioner of the South African Revenue Services from 1999 until 2009 when he took over as finance minister from Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel.
