Johannesburg - Gold production dropped 11.6% in May compared with the same month last year, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.
Gold output for the three months to May fell 11.3% when compared to the same three months of 2007.
According to the latest mining production and sales figures released by Stats SA, total mining production for the three months ended May 2008 decreased by 6.4% compared with the three months ended May 2007, mainly influenced by reported disruptions in the first quarter.
The actual total mining production for May 2008 increased slightly by 0.6% compared with May 2007 while total mining production for the three months to end May 2008, after seasonal adjustment, decreased by 1.5% compared with the previous three months.
But it was not only gold that contributed to the decrease this time around.
Production of non-gold minerals, particularly platinum group metals (PGMs), slipped 2.1%.
PGM output for the three months was 3.5% lower.
