Johannesburg - South African gold production has dipped by 15.9% year-on-year (y/y) in September from a revised -8.4% y/y (-11.5%) in August, it was reported by Statistics South Africa on Thursday.

The base year of the data has changed from 2000 to 2005.

The data also showed that production was down 1.8% quarter-on-quarter (q/q), seasonally adjusted, which is an important reading for third quarter GDP data coming up on November 24. It was down 7.5% in the third quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Platinum group metal (PGM) production was the main contributor (-4.6 percentage points) to the 1.8% decrease.

"PGM production was mainly affected by strike actions and mine accidents during the months of August and September 2009," said Stats SA.

The total seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices for the three months ended August 2009 reflected a decrease of 4.4% compared with the previous three months.

Stats SA said this decrease of 4.4% (-R2.6bn) was mainly due to a decrease of 12.8% (contributing -3.2 percentage points or -R1.9bn) in the sale value of PGMs and a decrease of 8.4% (contributing -1.8 percentage points or -R1.07bn) in the value of gold sales.
