Gauteng owed R3bn in traffic fines - report

Johannesburg - Gauteng motorists owe more than R3bn in traffic fines, The New Age reported on Thursday.

These were part of 7 million infringement notices issued in the past financial year.

Both Johannesburg and Tshwane traffic departments have been stripped of their powers to collect fines.

"We don't collect fines any more. They are collected by the Road Traffic Infringement Agency and we don't depend on a single cent of traffic fines," Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told the daily newspaper.

"We get our own budget every year."
