Gauteng obtains clean audit

Johannesburg - Gauteng has achieved eight clean audits and 23 unqualified audits for the 2012/13 financial year, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said on Thursday.

This was an impressive improvement on the previous year's results, she said in a statement.

"This takes Gauteng a step closer to achieving its target of 100% clean audits by 2014."

The clean audits were obtained in the office of the premier, provincial legislature, provincial treasury, social development, and sport, arts, culture, and recreation.

Three provincial entities also received clean audits. They were the Gauteng partnership fund, the Gauteng fund project office, and the Gautrain management agency.

The improved results were attributed to strengthened leadership and stabilised management in the province, strengthened capacity in strategic planning, financial management, and other key areas.

No departments overspent in the 2012/2013 financial year. Unauthorised spending was cut from R4.5bn to R392m.

Mokonyane also referred to the health department's status.

"We have successfully addressed leadership and management in the department of health. We have stabilised the department's finances and streamlined supply chain management," she said.

The department received a disclaimer in 2010/11 and now had a qualification with reduced audit findings.

"This reduction is evidence our efforts to turn around the department are having an impact. This indicates a clear path towards an unqualified audit and ultimately a clean audit."

Mokonyane, however, agreed that more work still had to be done.

"It took bold leadership and homegrown solutions to bring the department of health to this improved state of affairs."

The key focus area for the 2013/14 financial year would be to consolidate achievements and ensure all departments and entities achieved clean audits, she said.
