Gauteng govt didn't spend R1.5bn - DA

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government failed to spend R1.5bn in the 2010/2011 financial year, the Democratic Alliance claimed on Monday.

"The total underspend in all departments would have been much higher than R1.5bn, but was partly offset by overspending elsewhere, including R615m overspent on compensation of employees in education, and R1.3bn extra spent on hospitals and clinics," DA Gauteng caucus leader Jack Bloom said in a statement.

He based his statement on the fourth quarterly report of the Gauteng finance department.

Bloom said the provincial education department failed to spend R428m in early childhood development programmes, while there was a "gross underspending" of R855m in health facilities management.

"Despite an appalling ambulance service, R181m went unspent on emergency medical services," Bloom said.
