Gabon looking for SA investors

Cape Town - The oil rich country of Gabon, which has many bilateral relations with South Africa, said at a conference in Cape Town on Wednesday, that it plans to become an emerging economy by 2025.

According to Yves Sylvain Moussavou Boussougou, the deputy secretary general of Gabon, who laid out the country's strategic plan to become an emerging economy, 70% of the country's wealth comes from oil.

"We estimate that we will have 120 million consumers by 2025. Our country has huge mining resources such as iron, gold, diamonds and lead which is unexplored," he said.

"We are also rich in oil and our forests cover 80% of the country and we have enormous tourism potential. And we need investors to tap into these resources."

He said the South African experience is also important in Gabon, because SA knows how to manage resources.

"Our coastline is the third largest in the region, and has huge potential for exporting. Furthermore, Gabon have already established economic nodes, for potential business investment. Our aim is to transform our economy," he said.

Since the establishment of the bilateral relations between Gabon and South Africa in 1992 the trade co-operation between the two countries has been reinforced over the past few years. South Africa also has trade agreements with Gabon.

Aichatou Sanni Aoudou, the ambassador of Gabon, said that the conference is the first economic and business meeting between South Africa and Gabon to promote business relations.

"This meeting will give impetus to to our bilateral relations. We want to make Gabon an emerging country and economy by 2025, because the country has huge potential and resources. We want South African businesses to invest in a real and dynamic partnership," she said.

Mji Sikose the chief director for Central Africa at the department of international relations and cooperation, said that Gabon has the skeleton and the meeting will be adding the flesh to it.

"Gabon should also be looking at diversification and agriculture is one of it," she said.

Janine Myburgh the president of the Cape Chamber of Commerce, said that the chamber is looking forward to concluding many deals with Gabon."
