'G8 must keep to aid promises'

Abuja - Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua on Wednesday urged the world's eight most industrialised countries (G8) to fulfill their aid pledges to Africa.

At its last summit in Germany in June, the G8 pledged $60bn in aid to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa as well as reaffirmed commitments made during the 2005 summit in Scotland to increase aid to $50bn annually by 2010.

The president commented while receiving the United States' outgoing ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, according to a statement.

"We appreciate your leadership role in the G8 and hope you will continue to ensure that members fulfill their commitments to Africa, especially since 2005," the Nigerian leader said.
