Motorists set for possible relief

Johannesburg - The Energy Department told I-Net Bridge on Friday that fuel price changes for July would only be announced on July 9 as opposed to the usual last Friday of every month.

The Energy Minister took this decision during May in order to ensure that fuel prices were stable during the duration of the FIFA Soccer World Cup tournament, which ends in the country on July 11.

This means motorists still get another few days of using the same fuel prices that prevailed during June.

Petrol prices fell by 27 cents a litre (c/l) in June, while diesel and paraffin prices had fallen by 15c/l and 13c/l respectively. Another fuel cut is on the cards for July.

Data from the Central Energy Fund showed on Friday that there was an over-recovery of about 17 cents on the petrol price, 14 cents on the diesel price and an over-recovery of about 12 cents on paraffin.

The over-recovery comes on the back of weaker international oil prices and a rand/dollar exchange rate of about USD/ZAR7.7463.

Hannes. Have you always been an ignoramous or is it a recent affliction?

Eish! Jul 03 2010 11:08
Shame on you Mr minister...you robbing SA! This is so uneducated decision!

@ Hannes 14:22 Jul 02 2010 23:51
"Hannes" its people like you, that's not willing to stand up againt people who "twist our panties into a knot", and just sit back and do nothing against injustices commited against the citizens of our country, that promote things like this. Try this, for the next week why dont you give the lady at the counter an extra R5 every time you buy a bread or some milk, and see how that makes you feel. To teach you something so you can grow as a person, 99% of big problems does indeed start with a tiny little problem. So you go ahead and "enjoy what we have" and pay more than you are suppose to and we will "complain" and try to get this country back to the great place it can be.

Karroo Ostrich Jul 02 2010 20:01
Yes another week or 2 for the consumer to pay the old higer price for fuel means millios of over recovery rands extra in the coffers of this bloody govt. Do they think we r all a lot of bloody fools to swallow that one or is it just another manifestation of the A.N.C. govt's arrogance + blatant disregard for the public in general?

Jean Jul 02 2010 18:44
this quote says it all: "This means motorists still get another few days of using the same fuel prices that prevailed during June" What a load of bs! In the one sentence they say, there will be a DECREASE as there IS a over recovery, but hey don't worry the motorists will still get the BENEFIT of paying the higer price a while longer...It is time the motorists in this country stand up for what is right! GREED, GREED and more GREED.

CWebb Jul 02 2010 17:32
I agree with the synopsis from Jan Hofmeyer. A tragedy looms if we cut fuel costs before the end of the World Cup! For years we have seen the benefit / lack thereof on the 1st Wednesday of the month, but this month government can make more money if they make new rules! I ask you!

Bullshat Jul 02 2010 15:55
Hannes ou maat,10 sent klink nie veel nie maar maal dit met ongeveer 7 miljoen liter per dag wat gebruik word en dan praat ons weer

Fazil Jul 02 2010 15:40
The fuel levy is being used to top-up a drop in tax collection!

Stu Jul 02 2010 15:24
Have a look at the following site to see the expected decrease! Wish we could fire the ignorami who decided to do a "big brother" on us! http://www.shell.co.za/vpower/pprice.htm

Marema Jul 02 2010 15:20
this minister is a moron!

Ingy Jul 02 2010 14:52
CROOKS THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM AND ALL GOVT DEPARTMENTS. FROM ESKOM, TO ENERGY DEPT, TO HEALTH AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. I WONDER WHATS HAPPENING TO ALL THOSE DEPARTMENTS THAT SPENT MILLIONS OF THE WC FOR THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES. SO UNFAIR AND NOW WE ARE BEING ROBBED AGAIN

Peacock Jul 02 2010 14:47
The reason is valid !!!. but for whom??? the exchange rate hace dropped drastically over the past 7 days. from R 7.40 / $ to R7.70 / $. Who is to say what it will be in another week. The difference will then nullify the over recovery and there will not be a decrease, more than likely an increase, especially if the price of crude goes up as well.

@Idiots Jul 02 2010 14:41
The depths of moronic utterances that we get from "our" politicians never ceases to amaze me. This would definitely not have happened if the price had to go up. And they think that we are just as moronic as them, and that we believe this SH^T .

Paul Jul 02 2010 14:39
That is stupid! If thats the case, then they must give us an extra week in beginning of august to enjoy the lower price if it is set to go up for August

iFUNDI Jul 02 2010 14:33
Do they think we all morons? What the F@#$%^& has the SWC got to do with the price of fuel????

Mbo Jul 02 2010 14:33
Lets hope the energy minister does not forget to delay under recovery by at least 2 weeks. This is Bull!! why are we subjected to higher prices bcoz of world cup? as if we are not battling as is? does she know the impact of this on food prices inflation etc????? WTF

2k/month Petrol User Jul 02 2010 14:33
Why does the price have to be stable during the world cup? What purpose does that serve? They should at least come up with a better lie to tell the public. It is like they aren't even trying anymore. They are basically just saying "We want to scam more money out of you, deal with it suckers!"

Tommo Jul 02 2010 14:30
Milk the tourist, one way of making sure they dont come back.Meanwhile rip off the people who live here and pay your undeserved inflated salary.VIVA SWC VIVA ANC CORRUPTION!

Nick Jul 02 2010 14:24
If it was going up they wouldn't care so much about "stability for the world cup" I'm sure. More people on the roads = a last flurry at ripping off the punters. I ope FIFA don't object.

Hannes Jul 02 2010 14:22
OK people, could we all just calm down. So the fuel price is set to drop by what? 10c? Seariously, we're all complaining about that? Its a saving of R5 per tank for me. That's nowhere near enough to justify us getting our panties in a knot. Besides, it's not like the any other prices are going to drop with this. What's another couple of days. We South Africans should just learn to complain a little less, and just enjoy what we do have.

hein Jul 02 2010 14:22
then minister of energy is stealing from us. This is shameful bet expected

Phakz Jul 02 2010 14:21
Somebody please explain to me the motive behind keeping fuel price stable for the duration of the SWC?

DeonL Jul 02 2010 14:16
WTF! It is time for the SWC to Go, must everything stops for the SOCCER! The Tax season has opened, why not others? Lazyness!

Paslee Jul 02 2010 14:12
Bizaere!!!!!!!!!!!

anne Jul 02 2010 14:09
WHY? have the tourists not been ripped off enough, and what about us? making to too much money are we?

henk Jul 02 2010 14:07
rather admit that due to the worldcup all anc officials are at home or on holiday and doesnt have a clue of what is going on in their departments. not that they know during the rest of the time. or is it a case of wait and see how much they short after the last corruption session

Me Jul 02 2010 14:05
Oooo it's so nice to steal more from the tourists, and lets screw the locals in the process as well, they wouldn't mind at all. Viva SWC

big show Jul 02 2010 14:04
i agree with whatthehell, its typical of our govt, bunch of idiots! they are scoring bit time by not dropping the fuel price! wake up people and STOP voting for the ANC! they steel in front of your eyes! DROP THE FUEL PRICE NOW!!!!

sean Jul 02 2010 14:03
What a crap exscuse. They are trying to get as much money as possible from the overseas tourists. They dont give a sh#t about S.A. citizans.

Uncle Bob Jul 02 2010 14:00
I agree with the other contributors that this is a crap excuses but theoretically there will be an over-recovery for the next 2 weeks which will mean either a furter drop or a balancing out. but i do say that this is theoretical and who know what the energy minister will

Jan hofmeyr Jul 02 2010 13:51
Thank goodness for The energy minister's concern. Imagine the consequences of a drop in the fuel price before the world cup ends.

whatthehell Jul 02 2010 13:50
WTF has the soccer got to do with the petrol price, everyone will appreciate the drop - even the tourists. This would never happen if the price was going up. A few days on the same price - bull - it is more than a week; two if the price only drops on the 14th which is the first Wednesday after the 9th.
