Johannesburg - The Hendler commission of inquiry into the royalties paid to the Rakotea community near Brits, has handed its report to North West premier Thandi Modise, her spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"Judge [Herbert] Hendler handed over the final report to premier Modise in Mahikeng on Monday," said Lesiba Moses Kgwele.
He said Modise would study the report and its recommendations.
"The premier emphasised the significance of presenting the report to the Rankotea community as a matter of urgency, and that the report to be presented should be translated into Setswana to accommodate all residents."
The commission was set up in 2008 to investigate the management of royalties and income derived from mining companies, and the alleged maladministration of the funds of the Rakotea community near Brits.
The commission was appointed by former premier Edna Molewa.
It adjourned in 2010 when the evidence leader resigned from the commission on the grounds that he had joined the government and could not proceed in his role without his impartiality being an issue.
The work of the commission was also interrupted when Hendler had to go for a medical procedure overseas.
"The office of the premier had to wait for his return and full recovery. The appointment of another chairperson to replace Judge Hendler would have meant that the commission had to start the hearings afresh," said Kgwele.
Modise will expedite the findings of a commission of inquiry, said Kgwele.
"The premier emphasised the significance of presenting the report to the Rankotea community as a matter of urgency," he said.
He said the report should be translated into Setswana to accommodate all residents.
The date for the release of the report has not yet been made known. The premier had instructed that the process be completed as soon as possible, said Kgwele.
