Johannesburg - Fin24 and Finweek writer Marc Ashton was on Wednesday named the 2011 Telkom/Classic Business journalist of the year.
He won R75 000.
“The journalist of the year awards are unique to South Africa in that entries do not need to be submitted, but are selected from published financial writing in print and on the internet,” said Classic Business anchor John Fraser, the convenor of the awards.
Last year’s winner was Rob Rose of the Sunday Times.
The judges were Chris Gilmour from Absa Investments, Jeremy Sampson from Interbrand Sampson and Simon Brown from JustOneLap.com.
Ashton was commended by the judges for his authoritative coverage of the small business sector and for an analysis of the technology interests of Johann Rupert.
He also won a sectoral award for his coverage of small business.
Duncan McLeod won the ICT category for work published in the Financial Mail, Larry Claasen of the Financial Mail was joint winner in the personal finance and money category for his reporting on IT in the Cape, alongside Vic de Klerk of FinWeek for reporting on Sharemax.
Stephen Cranston of the Financial Mail won in the Companies section, while Claire Bisseker won the award in the Broader Economy section for an article in the Financial Mail on private healthcare.
