Fewer debt judgments against consumers

Johannesburg - The total number of civil judgments recorded for debt in SA in March decreased 22.1% year-on-year (y/y) after a 24.4% y/y decrease in February, data released by Statistics SA (Stats SA) showed on Thursday.

The total number of civil judgments recorded for debt decreased by 21.3% for the first quarter of 2011, compared with the first quarter of 2010.

In addition, the first quarter of 2011 reflected a 13.4% decrease in the total number of civil summonses issued for debt, compared with the first quarter of 2010. A 10.8% y/y fall was recorded in March 2011.

There was a 22.4% decrease in the total value of civil judgments recorded for debt for the first quarter of 2011, compared with the first quarter of 2010. A y/y drop of 22.2% was recorded in March 2011 to R503m.
