Johannesburg - Former Nersa CEO Phindile Baleni has been appointed director general in Gauteng premier David Makhura's office, the provincial government said on Tuesday.
"Ms Baleni brings a wealth of experience in senior management leadership and in the management of complex and diverse projects," the Gauteng government said in a statement.
Her most recent job was as National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) CEO.
"We are confident that she will provide strategic leadership to the civil service," Makhura said.
On Monday, the energy ministry said Baleni resigned from her position to "pursue other interests".
The ministry and department thanked Baleni for her contribution to South Africa's energy sector during her term as Nersa CEO, spokesperson Zodwa Visser said in a statement.
"The energy industry has benefited greatly from her excellent mind, fine work ethic and integrity," Visser said.
The department would soon begin recruiting a new Nersa CEO. In the meanwhile the energy minister would appoint an interim CEO.
