Drought not an immediate threat for Eskom

Johannesburg - The current drought conditions in South Africa do not pose an immediate threat to Eskom's ability to generate electricity, Eskom executive for generation Matshela Koko said on Monday.

Speaking at the utility's quarterly briefing on the state of the electricity system, Koko said the utility continued to receive water at a 95% security level and there was no reason to expect that it would be at a lower level over the next 12 months. He said the drought would not compromise electricity supply in the medium to long term.

However, there were discussions with the Department of Water Affairs for contingency plans if the dry spell lasts longer, he said.

The mooted contingency measures could entail pumping water from different dam areas, he said.

Eskom's fleet of coal-fired power stations use water for cooling purposes.
