Johannesburg - Eskom will spend about R10bn on repairing roads ruined by trucks delivering coal to power stations. These costs have been factored into its application to triple electricity tariffs over the next three years.

But the utility is unwilling to repair roads to compensate Gauteng for the damage its thousands of coal trucks have caused to roads around towns like Hendrina, Standerton and Ermelo.

It wants to ensure that these roads remain in good enough condition to enable delivery of coal to the power stations to continue.

"The roads have become untraversable and dangerous for coal lorries and other vehicles. Eskom will therefore take various steps to ameliorate the impact of road transport on communities and rehabilitate the roads in Mpumalanga where feasible," reads the application submitted to Nersa.

Up to 15% of Eskom's generating capacity of some 35 000MW is under threat if the repair work is not done. "If it is decided that Eskom should not do the road maintenance, the cost of transporting the coal will have to be adjusted because the cost of conveying the coal is affected by the condition of the roads," states the application.
