Eskom scales down load shedding

Cape Town - Eskom confirmed to Fin24 on Thursday evening that it is now on stage two of load shedding, meaning that there is a demand to save only 2 000 MW of electricity to prevent the national grid from total collapse.

The different stages dictate the amount of electricity to be shed. It is as follows:

Stage 1 - up to 1 000 MW of electricity must be shed.
Stage 2 - up to 2 000 MW of electricity must be shed; and
Stage 3 - up to 4 000 MW of electricity must be she.

During stages 1 and 2, power outages will take place from 06:00 to 22:00 from Monday to Saturday. Whereas stage 3 will see power cuts 24 hours a day throughout the week.

Reuters reported that Eskom will lift its power emergency at 22:00, but warned that rolling blackouts are likely to resume on Friday morning.

"We are still in a serious situation. The outlook at this stage is not favourable," spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said.

"There's a high probability of load shedding for tomorrow as well but we'll confirm that once we've done our final planning,"

Eskom imposed rolling blackouts for the first time since 2008 on Thursday morning after heavy rains soaked coal supplies.
