Johannesburg - Eskom said on Wednesday it had restored 1 200 megawatts of electricity of the 9 500 MW of power lost on Tuesday in plant breakdowns.
"Early this morning, two generating units of 600 MW each were brought back to service," Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe told Reuters.
After a day of stage 2 power outages, Eskom escalated load shedding on Tuesday to cut off 4 000 MW (stage 3) from the grid.
Stage 3 load shedding was implemented from 18:00 on Tuesday.
