Eskom power station loses unit

Johannesburg - The Duvha power station near Witbank has lost 600MW of power generation due to a boiler casing rupturing, Eskom said on Tuesday.

"There was an incident on Sunday evening close to midnight, and on unit three of our Duvha power station near Witbank," spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said.

"No injures were reported. The incident resulted in extensive damage to the boiler. The incident is under investigation and the duration of the repair and the cost of the repair are not known at this time."

He said the loss of the unit added pressure to the national grid, but no power cuts were anticipated.

At the beginning of March, the power utility introduced emergency rostered power cuts in certain areas to prevent a collapse of the national grid after coal used for electricity generation became wet.

"The supply issues will be a problem for the next few months unless we have aggressive supply interventions of at least 3000MW," former CEO Brian Dames, who stepped down from Eskom at the end of March, said on March 11.
