Johannesburg
- Electricity supplier Eskom has asked its key industrial customers to reduce
electricity consumption during the 2010 FIFA
World Cup and at the same time has entered into power supply agreements with
neighbouring countries.
The expected saving from the voluntary demand reduction
would be 411MW. "That will be in addition to the [current] voluntary 10%
reduction [programme]," said Erica Johnson, Eskom's chief officer for
customer network business. "Specifically for the World Cup we have asked
people to reduce demand, without affecting their operations."
Johnson said that the demand saving and the agreement with the
Southern African Power
Pool (SAPP) would enable Eskom to be flexible
and respond to any emergency situation during the World Cup. "These
measures give us confidence that we can provide reliable supply during the
games," said Johnson.
Eskom would not commit to no load-shedding during the event.
"There is a very low chance there will be load shedding," said
Johnson. Eskom also has a standby capacity of 150MW from the Democratic of Republic Congo, in addition to what it already
imports from Mozambique.
