Johannesburg - Eskom's board meeting on Friday ended with no official announcement on the future of its embattled CEO Jacob Maroga.

There is no announcement and none scheduled, said Ayandi Shezi, spokesperson for Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan.

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger confirmed that "no official announcement" was made after Friday's board meeting.

It was reported on Friday that a group of anonymous senior Eskom workers had called on Hogan to fire Maroga.

Maroga on Friday denied the Eskom board had asked him to step down. He told a radio station no such request had been made, but declined to be interviewed on air.

Shezi told Fin24.com that "the matter has been brought the minister's attention and she will, if necessary, comment in due course".

Citing "sources", Business Day reported on Friday that the board wanted Maroga to leave instead of them having to fire him.

Maroga was at Eskom's helm during rolling blackouts in 2008. The power utility recently requested a 45% tariff hike every year for the next three years.
