Cape Town - Energy Minister Dipiuo Peters has said South Africa will reach its target of producing 875MW of electricity a year through renewable energy by 2013.
In reply to a question in parliament, Peters told MPs that the department is establishing the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) which will buy power from all independent power producers (IPPs), including those which generate renewable energy.
"Moreover, the regulator is putting together the procurement guidelines as prescribed in the Regulation on New Generation Capacity Act of 2009, which will enable the ISMO to procure power from renewable energy IPPs," said Peters.
Peters is also confident that Eskom will be able to increase its quota for solar-produced energy from 50MW to 500MW per year.
"Eskom has recently announced the inclusion of a 100MW solar thermal power station in the World Bank loan which was granted recently. This will be the first of its kind on the African continent and the largest in the world when commissioned in 2016," said Peters.
