Johannesburg - Neither the public enterprises department nor Eskom has confirmed or denied, whether the power utility's CEO Jacob Maroga has been asked to resign.

DPE minister Barbara Hogan's spokesperson Ayanda Shezi would only admit that "the matter has been brought the minister's attention and she will, if necessary, comment in due course".

Eskom spokespersons Fani Zulu and Andrew Etzinger were also not able to answer whether Maroga was asked to resign. Etzinger said he was not aware of the alleged request and referred questions to Zulu, who in turn referred Fin24.com back to Etzinger.

"I have resigned from Eskom and am serving my last day," said Zulu. "It therefore wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment in the media about Eskom."

Fin24.com's request to speak to either Maroga or Eskom chairperson Bobby Godsell also fell on deaf ears, as it was said they were both attending a board meeting. That is the second board meeting in as many days.

Business Day newspaper said on Friday Maroga was asked to resign in a board meeting on Thursday, but Maroga later denied the claim on Talk Radio 702.
