Johannesburg - Employers were urged by the labour department
on Thursday to be careful of people who visited their workplaces to carry out
inspections or sell legislative documents, after two men were caught posing as
labour officials.
Spokesperson Wisane Mabasa said two men posing as labour
officials tried to sell an employer legislative documents, claiming the current
ones were outdated. The employer later called the department of labour to
confirm his payment of R2 038 and realised then that he had been robbed.
Police were notified, the two men were caught and the cheque the employer had paid them with was retrieved.
Chief director Marsha Bronkhorst said all labour legislation
remained legal and could change only after public consultations and a public
announcement had been made.
She said anyone who visited workplaces selling such documents should
do it in the name of their company and if employers decided to buy, they were doing so at their own risk.
However, if anyone was posing as a representative of the department conducting inspections or selling "legislation" they were doing so under false pretences.
All labour legislation can be sourced from the offices of the Department of Labour nationwide or on the departmental website www.labour.gov.za.
