Johannesburg - Members of the Food Safety Initiative (FSI), a division within the Consumer Goods Council of SA, have compiled food product recall guidelines following the outbreak of a deadly strain of E.coli in Germany.
E.coli, a type of bacteria, had an adverse effect on consumer health and could cause illness and even death, the FSI said on Wednesday.
A product recall can be initiated by the food processor/supplier, or a regulatory body such as the department of health, or by a consumer complaint. The food safety alert will be valid in the event that a hazard or a defect is identified, and the affected product is in the market.
"A successful recall increases consumer trust and loyalty. Such a recall is managed in an open, direct and honest communication strategy at all times and based on clear scientific facts and principles," the body said.
The division also said that food processors and suppliers should verify compliance to relevant regulations and standards during independent audits. These audits included testing of the traceability and recall systems.
Test recalls enable food processors and suppliers to implement actions required to manage any product recall successfully, without physically removing product from the market.
Consumers have been urged to report any defected product to management at the store where they purchase the product from in order to effectively maintain food safety.
